Edges were added to ice skates by the Dutch in about the 13th or 14th century.
Ice skates were made of steel, with sharpened edges on the bottom to aid movement.
Most modern Skates are made in the same way.
Ice skating works because the metal blade at the bottom can glide with very little friction over the surface of the ice.

Figure skating is one of the sports using skates.
The Costumes and tricks and skills combine to make a great spectator sport.
Even Youngsters are able to get out on the ice, they are usually less fearful of hurting themselves and thus throw themselves into it and are less inhibited!
